Sheena Maclaine, Chair of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club Reports:
On Friday last week (22 January 2016) I was contacted by email by the Kennel Club as the Breed Health Liaison Representative with news of this exciting prospect. Without delay and by return email to the Animal Health Trust, I confirmed that the Cavalier Club would like the Cavalier to be considered and pledged the £1000 required.
The Animal Health Trust has confirmed that the Cavalier has been assigned a confirmed position on the “first 50 breeds” list. The Kennel Club believes that this project will have profound implications for future generations of dogs of all breeds. The project has been “match funded” by the Kennel Club Charitable Trust and excitingly the Give A Dog A Genome aims to sequence the entire genome (all 2.4 billion letters of DNA) for the 50 different dogs during 2016.
We are in good hands. This project is headed up by Dr Cathryn Mellersh and her team who have already assisted our breed with the DNA test for Dry Eye/Curly Coat & Episodic Falling.
